Thai Papaya Salad Recipe

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 2 cups of shredded green papaya
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 3-5 bird eye’s Thai chili peppers (depending on your spice level)
  • 2 tbsp. of lime juice (half of a lime)
  • 2 tbsp. of palm sugar (you can use ½ tbsp. of brown sugar or white sugar instead of palm sugar)
  • 1 tomato (cut into 6 slices) or 10 cherry tomatoes
  • 3 tbsp. of fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp. of dry roasted peanuts
  • ¼ tsp. of salt
  • Green cabbage
  • Fresh mint (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the chili peppers, garlic, salt, and 5-7 strands of green papaya into the mortar and smash them with a pestle. Place one hand on top of the mortar to prevent the chili peppers from escaping and getting into your eyes.
  2. Add the peanuts, palm sugar, and tomatoes. Continue to smash ingredients until they are crushed into pieces.
  3. Add the shredded papaya, lime juice, and fish sauce.
  4. Mix everything well with the pestle and a spoon. Taste and adjust your seasoning. The taste should be sweet, sour, salty, and spicy.
  5. Garnish with some fresh mint (optional).
  6. Serve with fresh slices of green cabbage.
